    In het Artware onderzoek-atelier Kunst & Architectuur | Resonance wordt samengewerkt met B32 artspace en het Maastricht Institute of Arts en de Maastricht Academy of Architecture (The Philosophers Studio).

    Tijdens de laatste fase van dit onderzoek-atelier worden de deelnemende studenten (11) in de gelegenheid gesteld om gedurende de maanden mei en juni de ruimte van B32 als gemeenschappelijke studio te gebruiken en o.l.v. verschillende (gast)docenten het thema resonantie binnen hun artistieke praktijk intensief te bevragen.

    Op 22 en 23 juni en 29 en 30 juni 2024 zal het proces worden stopgezet en zullen de resultaten van de workshop aan het publiek worden getoond. Maar al eerder zal er een publieke happening plaats vinden op dinsdag 21 mei om 17 uur bij B32. Deze happening is de afronding van een drieweekse workshop o.l.v. de uit Rotterdam afkomstige kunstenaar Omid Kheirabadi (Teheran, 1992).

    In zijn praktijk codeert Kheirabadi laatkapitalistische maatschappelijke relaties om hun onderdrukkende mechanismen en hun effecten op individuen te begrijpen. Zijn werken draaien rond machtskwesties, mondiale verschillen in economie en juridische status, westerse (Europese) hegemonie en arbeid, met als doel heersende verhalen uit te dagen. Zijn artistieke inspiratie komt voort uit zijn levenservaringen en politieke motivaties, waarbij hij de kracht van kunst nastreeft om dialoog uit te lokken. Door ruimtes te creëren die ons aanmoedigen om de systemen die ons leven vormgeven in twijfel te trekken, bevordert zijn praktijk de verkenning van nieuwe mogelijkheden voor samenleven. Een voorbeeld zijn zijn 'performancesessies', waarbij mensen met verschillende achtergronden samenkomen en een dialoog aangaan om geïmproviseerde performatieve composities te co-creëren op basis van hun persoonlijke verhalen.
    Hij behaalde een MFA in Artistiek Onderzoek aan de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (Den Haag) in 2022 en een MA in Interieurarchitectuur aan de Academie van Bouwkunst Maastricht in 2019.

    In the Artware research studio Art & Architecture | Resonance collaborates with B32 artspace, and the Maastricht Institute of Arts and the Maastricht Academy of Architecture (The Philosophers Studio).

    During the final phase of this research studio, the participating students (11) are given the opportunity to use B32 artspace as a communal studio during the months of May and June. Under the guidance of various (guest)teachers, the students explore the theme of resonance through which they will question their artistic practice intensively.

    On June 22 and 23 and June 29 and 30 the process will be stopped and the results of the workshop will be shown to the public. Prior to that, a public event will take place on Tuesday, May 21 at 5 PM at B32. This happening is the conclusion of a three-week workshop led by the Rotterdam artist Omid Kheirabadi (Tehran, 1992).

    In his practice, Kheirabadi decodes late-capitalist societal relationships to comprehend their oppressive mechanisms and their effects on individuals. His works revolve around questions of power, global disparities in economics and legal status, Western (European) hegemony, and labor, with the aim of challenging prevailing narratives. His artistic inspiration stems from his life experiences and political motivations, pursuing the power of art to provoke dialogue. By creating spaces that encourage us to question the systems that shape our lives, his practice fosters the exploration of new possibilities for coexistence. One example is his"performance sessions", where people from different backgrounds gather and engage in dialogue to co-create improvised performative compositions based on their personal narratives.
    He obtained an MFA in Artistic Research from the Royal Academy of Art (The Hague) in 2022 and an MA in Interior Architecture from the Maastricht Academy of Architecture in 2019    .

  2. Assisting eyes

    De tentoonstelling 'asssisting eyes' onthult een vlechtwerk aan experimenten, waarbij portretten van een rivier, beweging, mos en licht met elkaar worden verweven. Door het idee en het gebruik van fotografie naar verschillende schalen uit te breiden, brengen Tanja Engelberts, Mio Fujimaki en Dries Segers dingen letterlijk naar de oppervlakte en onderzoeken ze nieuwe manieren om energie te verbeelden.

    Op 13 april presenteerde Tom Viaene (FoMu, TRIGGER magazine) zijn kijk op het thema energie, dat centraal staat in het nieuwste nummer van TRIGGER magazine, gerealiseerd in samenwerking met Futures Photography.

    Deze tentoonstelling maakte deel uit van het Archipelprogramma van de 'Biennale de l'Image Possible' van Luik en is samengesteld door Charlotte Koenen.
    Gerealiseerd met de steun van het Mondriaan Fonds en de Gemeente Maastricht.

    The exhibition 'assisting eyes' unveils a tapestry of experimentation, weaving together portraits of a river, movement, moss and light. By extending the idea and use of photography to different scales, Tanja Engelberts, Mio Fujimaki and Dries Segers literally bring things to the surface, exploring new ways of imagining energy.

    On the 13th of April, Tom Viaene (FoMu, TRIGGER magazine) presented his take on the theme of energy, which is the central focus of the latest issue of TRIGGER magazine, realised in collaboration with Futures Photography. Keep an eye on our social media for updates regarding the time of this event.

    This exhibition was part of the Archipel programme of the 'Biennale de l'Image Possible' of Liege (BE) and is curated by Charlotte Koenen.

  3. De zeefdrukwerkplaats / Screen print workshop

    Tussen 20 januari en 16 februari organiseerde Amber Lalieu een open zeefdrukworkshop bij B32. In deze periode nodigde zij kunstenaars uit om werken mee te nemen die ze hebben liggen, waar ze op dit moment niet zo goed raad mee weten. Door deze werken te vertalen naar een zeefdruk hoopte ze het werk tot een conclusie te brengen of juist iets nieuws bloot te leggen.
    Op 17 en 18 februari opende B32 de deuren, en kon de uitkomst van de werkplaats aanschouwd worden.

    Between January 20 and February 16 Amber Lalieu hosted an open screen print workshop at B32. In this period Amber invited artists to bring works they had lying around, with which they didn't really know what to do at the moment. By translating these works into a screen print, she hoped to either bring the work to a finish or else open up some more cans of worms.
    On February 17 and 18, B32 opened its doors to show you the outcome of the workshop.

  4. Open Call for AiR Programme at B32

    B32 is an independent initiative for and by artists that provides space for experimental art and other forms of cultural expression. It was founded in 2002 and is currently located in the former community centre in De Ravelijn neighbourhood of Maastricht. The district is primarily known as a former residential school, but the name also refers to a specific part of the defence works situated in that area.

      

    This year, B32 launches a new artist-in-residence trajectory, in the course of which the resident will be invited to make use of B32’s venue as a working and presentation space. This presentation can take on a variety of formats, of different durations and degrees of publicity (talk, screening, performance, open studio, dinner, publication, studio visit, workshop, and more). 

    This call is addressed to artists whose work can benefit from the interaction with the particular (social, historical, geographical, or physical) context of B32, and who are interested in opening up their working process to the artistic community of Maastricht, our neighbours, and visitors. 

    As we continue to explore the position of B32 in De Ravelijn neighbourhood, Maastricht, and the region, we look forward to hosting someone who is interested in thinking along with us, from within their own practice. We are looking in particular for practices which embody some of the following qualities: research-driven, interventionist, participatory, collaborative, site-specific, context-sensitive… the list is not exhaustive.

    The residency period starts in August and ends in September (specific dates to be defined together with the resident).

      

    The residency entails:

    • Working period of up to 6 weeks, during which the resident can plan the rhythm of their stay in dialogue with the organisers (the minimum period being 10 days). 

    • Access to the space of 8 by 15 meters, located in a building housing ateliers. The photos of the space and our previous projects can be found on our website. 

    • An opportunity to exchange ideas and enter into a dialogue with the community of B32, the broader artistic community in the area, and invited guests.

    • A possibility to test out different presentation formats. 

    • Production and communication support of the B32 team.

    • Artist fee of 1000 EUR and a project budget of up to1000 EUR (the project budget covers all costs related to production, programming, transport, etc. – all amounts are including VAT)

    • Optional accommodation in a private room of a shared apartment of B32 team members, 10 minutes walk from the space (more information on request).

      

    Applications should contain the following elements:

    • Your CV and portfolio. 

    • Your motivation and a short project plan (please limit your writing to 1-2 pages of text in total). While writing, you can keep in mind the following questions:

      • Which area of your practice/ research you plan to work on during your stay in Maastricht? How can the particular context of B32 and the residency format we offer support this? 

      • If you have ideas regarding the presentation or other activities you would like organise during your stay, feel free to include them.

      • You do not need to submit a budget – this can be developed at a later stage, in dialogue with the organisers. However, it is important to keep the project budget amount (1000 EUR incl. VAT) in mind and to make sure that your plans are financially feasible.

    B32 is een onafhankelijk initiatief voor en door kunstenaars dat ruimte biedt aan experimentele kunst- en cultuuruitingen. Zij werd opgericht in 2002 en is momenteel gevestigd in het voormalige buurtcentrum in de wijk ‘De Ravelijn’ in Maastricht. Deze wijk staat voornamelijk bekend als een voormalige woonschool, maar de naam verwijst ook naar een specifiek deel van de verdedigingswerken die zich in dat gebied bevonden.

      

    Dit jaar lanceert B32 een nieuw artist-in-residence traject, waarbij de resident wordt uitgenodigd om gebruik te maken van de locatie van B32 als werk- en presentatieruimte. Deze presentatie kan verschillende vormen aannemen, van verschillende duur en met verschillende graden van openbaarheid (lezing, screening, performance, open atelier, diner, publicatie, atelierbezoek, workshop, en meer).

    Deze oproep is gericht aan kunstenaars wiens werk kan profiteren van de interactie met de specifieke (sociale, historische, geografische of fysieke) context van B32, en die geïnteresseerd zijn in het openstellen van hun werkproces voor de artistieke gemeenschap van Maastricht, onze buren en bezoekers.

    Terwijl we de positie van B32 in De Ravelijn, Maastricht en de regio verder onderzoeken, kijken we ernaar uit om iemand te verwelkomen die geïnteresseerd is om met ons mee te denken vanuit hun eigen praktijk. We zijn met name op zoek naar praktijken die enkele van de volgende kwaliteiten belichamen: onderzoeksgedreven, interventionistisch, participatief, collaboratief, site-specifiek, contextgevoelig... de lijst is niet volledig.

    De residentieperiode begint in augustus en eindigt in september (specifieke data worden samen met de resident bepaald).

      

    De residentie omvat:

    • Een werkperiode van maximaal 6 weken, waarin de resident het ritme van hun verblijf in overleg met de organisatoren kan plannen (de minimale periode is 10 dagen).

    • Toegang tot een ruimte van 8 bij 15 meter, gelegen in een ateliergebouw. Foto's van de ruimte en de plattegrond zijn hier te vinden.

    • Een kans om ideeën uit te wisselen en in dialoog te treden met de gemeenschap van B32, de bredere lokale artistieke gemeenschap, en uitgenodigde gasten.

    • Een mogelijkheid om verschillende presentatievormen uit te proberen.

    • Productie- en communicatiesteun van het B32-team.

    • Een kunstenaarsvergoeding van 1000 EUR en een projectbudget van maximaal 1000 EUR (het projectbudget dekt alle kosten met betrekking tot productie, programmering, transport, enz. – alle bedragen zijn inclusief btw).

    • Optionele accommodatie in een privékamer van een gedeeld appartement van B32-teamleden, op 10 minuten lopen van de ruimte (meer informatie op aanvraag).

      

    Aanmeldingen moeten de volgende elementen bevatten:

    • Je cv en portfolio.

    • Je motivatie en een kort projectplan (beperk je tekst tot 1-2 pagina's). Tijdens het schrijven kun je de volgende vragen in gedachten houden:

      • Welk gebied van je praktijk/onderzoek wil je (verder) ontwikkelen tijdens je verblijf in Maastricht? Hoe kan de specifieke context van B32 en het residentievorm die wij aanbieden dit ondersteunen?

      • Als je ideeën hebt over de presentatie of andere activiteiten die je tijdens je verblijf zou willen organiseren, voeg deze dan gerust al toe.

      • Je hoeft geen budget in te dienen – dit kan in een later stadium in overleg met de organisatoren worden ontwikkeld. Het is echter wel belangrijk om de hoogte van het projectbudget (1000 EUR incl. btw) in gedachten te houden en ervoor te zorgen dat je plannen financieel haalbaar zijn.

  5. Open studio Artist-in-Residence Valentino Russo

    In augustus zijn we gestart met de nieuwe editie van ons residentieprogramma met kunstenaar Valentino Russo. We waren vereerd om bijna 150 inzendingen voor onze open call te mogen ontvangen en ontdekten dat Valentino's voorstel en werkmethoden op een spannende en onverwachte manier aansluiten bij de visie van B32.

    Tijdens zijn residentie zal hij verder onderzoek doen naar concepten zoals 'onduurzaamheid' en 'onevenwicht' door veldwerk uit te voeren in en rond de faciliteiten die datacenters huisvesten in de Limburgse steden Geleen, Heerlen en Maastricht.

    Over de kunstenaar:
    Valentino Russo (geb. 1994, Rome, IT) is een beeldend kunstenaar en medeoprichter en mede-curator van The Balcony in Den Haag. Zijn werk 'wordt beïnvloed door de verspreidbaarheid en transformatie van beelden in het internettijdperk, de dynamiek van zelfpresentatie in online sferen en het vocabulaire van sociale media. Hij werkt voornamelijk met found footage en fotografie en behandelt daarnaast thema's als mediasaturatie, mediawijsheid, aandachtseconomie en de manier waarop deze ons begrip van de waarheid beïnvloeden.'     Na het behalen van zijn bachelor in Beeldende Kunst aan de IUAV in Venetië, zette hij zijn studies voort aan de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (KABK) in Den Haag, waar hij in 2018 afstudeerde met een master in Artistiek Onderzoek. Valentino is ook medeoprichter en mede-curator van The Balcony in Den Haag. Zijn werken en video's zijn tentoongesteld op internationale locaties zoals Cas-co (Leuven, BE), Fabbrica del Vapore (Milaan, IT), Van Nellefabriek (Rotterdam, NL) en tijdens de 6e Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition (Taiwan, TW).

    Publiek programma:
    Om Valentino welkom te heten in Maastricht, organiseren we een informele bijeenkomst op donderdag 15 augustus van 18.00 tot 21.00.
    Om 19:00 tonen we een selectie van videowerken van Valentino.
    Kom langs voor een praatje en een drankje (of wat huisgemaakte groene gazpacho!).

    Op vrijdag 23 augustus, vanaf 18:00, en zaterdag 24 augustus, vanaf 15:00, zal Valentino zijn onderzoek en work-in-progress presenteren tijdens een open studio. Op vrijdag om 18:00 uur vindt een rondleiding met de kunstenaar plaats, gevolgd door een kleine receptie.

    In August we kicked off the new edition of our residency programme with artist Valentino Russo. We were humbled to receive nearly 150 submissions to our open call and found that Valentino's proposal and working method aligned in an exciting and unexpected way with B32's vision.

    During his residency, he will further research concepts of 'unsustainability' and 'disequilibrium', among others, by conducting fieldwork in and around the facilities hosting data centres in the southern cities of Geleen, Heerlen, and Maastricht.

    About the artist:
    Valentino Russo (b.1994, Rome, IT) is a visual artist and co-founder and co-curator of The Balcony in The Hague. His work 'is informed by the spreadability and transformation of images in the Internet age, the dynamics of self-presentation in online spheres, and the vocabulary of social media. Working mainly with found footage and photography, he further addresses themes of media saturation, media literacy, attention economy, and the way these influence our understanding of truth.'     After obtaining his BA in Visual Arts at IUAV in Venice, Valentino continued his studies in The Hague at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) where he graduated with a MA in Artistic Research in 2018. Valentino is also co-founder and co-curator of The Balcony in The Hague. His works and videos have been exhibited in international venues such as Cas-co (Leuven, BE), Fabbrica del Vapore (Milan, IT), Van Nellefabriek (Rotterdam, NL), and at the 6th Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition (Taiwan, TW).

    To welcome Valentino to Maastricht, we’re hosting an informal get-together with on Thursday, August 15th, from 6 to 9 PM.
    At 7 PM we’ll screen a selection of video works by Valentino.
    Drop by for a chat and a drink (or some home-made green gazpacho!).

    On Friday, August 23rd, from 6 to 9 PM and Saturday, August 24th, from 3 to 7 PM, Valentino will present his research and work-in-progress during an open studio. A guided tour with the artist will take place on Friday at 7 PM, followed by a small reception.
